DIY Cupcake Tower Tutorial

This is a tutorial on how to make a beautiful and sturdy 3-tier cupcake tower made of used or recycled card boards that we just usually throw away.

What you need:
  • used carton boxes
  • glue
  • scissors
  • cutter
  • ruler
  • wrapping paper
  • ribbon
  • pencil/pen
What to do:

1. Make the board/server
  •  Get your carton box. It should be big enough for it should be layered to get a thick cupcake tower. The thicker the board, the sturdier the tower is.
  • Using your pen as your marker, draw circles on the board.  It should consists of three sizes- two small, 2 medium and two large. For this tower, the diameter of the boards are 16 inches, 12 inches and 8 inches.

TIP: You can use mixing bowls or anything round you have at home as your template. If you want to be particular in size, you can use yarn or string to help you draw circles with a particular measurement.

  •  Cut the circles using a cutter. Use a cutter instead of scissors because using scissors will flatten the edges of the circles.

    • Glue the boards of the the same size. Glue them with the corrugation opposite or perpendicular to each other. This makes the board sturdier.

    2. Make the stand
    •  Make a pattern of the stand. This is 12 inches in height which I divided into three parts- 2 five-inch and a two -inch in height. Those three parts are cut in different widths to serve as the base and holder of the boards for each tier of the cupcake tower. The base should be at least half of your board or server.

    • Trace the pattern on the board using a pen. You need four of this cut. Cut the stand and glue two boards together giving you a pair of thick stand boards. On the center of each stand, make a slit where they will be set to stand. Thew slit should 6 inches on the upper part of one stand and 6 inches on the lower part of the other stand. The slit should be as wide as the thickness of the stand you have.

    3. Cut holes on the boards and assemble
    • Make perpendicular slits on each board. The measurement of the slits should fit with your stand's measurement. The biggest round board's slit should be of the same size of the second division of your stand pattern and the second tier should be of the same size with the top division of your stand's pattern.
    •  To secure the top tier from moving, make perpendicular slits or holes on your top tier board just like what you did on the two other boards. Then, make indentations on top of the stands. The indentation on the stand and the slits on the board should fit. This will ensure that the top tier is sturdy and centered.
    • Assemble your cupcake tower to make sure that they fit. Assemble the parts the same way you assemble store bought DIY cupcake tower kits.

    4. Decorate your cupcake tower
    •  Decorate your cupcake tower by wrapping it with the design of your chose. Cover the sides of the boards with ribbon to hide the corrugation of the cardboard.
    •  For the top tier board, I covered the slit on one side with a thin board so there is no whole seen on top of your cupcake tower. Cover the sides of the boards with ribbon to hide the corrugation of the cardboard.
    •  You may now assemble and use your cupcake tower. You may also add other embellishments to add beauty to your cupcake tower.
